Challenge Statement
Transforming Smallholder Agriculture

Smallholder farming represents over 80 percent of the world's farms, primarily in low- and middle-income countries, and supplies 50 percent of global food. These farming systems are often characterized by degraded soils and scarce nutrients and water, low and stagnating crop yields, and reduced product quality and profitability, exacerbated by climate change, low resource use efficiencies, declining soil health, and gender inequalities.
While traditional agronomic research enhances our understanding of fundamental processes, it is often based on outdated approaches and may not reflect stakeholders' needs. As a result, smallholder farmers often make critical agronomic decisions regarding crop choice, planting dates and pests, disease, weeds, soil fertility, and water management based on suboptimal practices and information. Social, economic, and institutional constraints and adherence to conventional supply-driven scaling strategies hamper interventions' development, deployment, and uptake. This hurts food and nutrition security, equitable livelihoods, and ecosystem health.
The Solution
Through the provision of decision-support agronomy tools, EiA is dedicated to transforming agricultural practices by elevating yield and profitability, streamlining resource utilization, reducing yield variations, and fostering soil health. This comprehensive approach enables farmers to navigate crucial decisions ranging from crop selection and planting schedules to the meticulous management of nutrients and water. Moreover, the integration of weather-related services empowers farmers with indispensable insights, enabling them to fine-tune their agricultural methods to harmonize with prevailing climate conditions.
By harnessing these tools' potential, farmers and extension workers are equipped with the means to make informed choices, effectively manage risk, optimize their farming operations, and unlock their full agricultural potential. This holistic approach ensures increased productivity and contributes to the sustainability and resilience of agricultural systems, creating a pathway towards a more prosperous future for farming communities in the Global South.
